George Richard Moscone is best remembered as the mayor of San Francisco who, along with San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, was shot and killed by Dan White on November 27, 1978. A Little Background George Moscone was born and raised in San Francisco. Moscone opened his private law practice in 1956 in San Francisco. [2] Moscone's Political Career Moscone, a Democrat, began his career in 1963 by winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and was known for his defense of the poor, racial minorities and small business owners. Moscone's Importance to the GLBT Community Moscone is noted for having been "the first mayor to appoint large numbers of women, gays and lesbians and racial minorities to city commissions and advisory boards. The double murder of Moscone and Harvey Milk shocked the City and possibly the whole world into really noticing him. (Harvey Milk, however, no matter how he died, would have and will always be known for being the first openly gay, United States elected government official. Moscone would run for one more term in 1979 and then endorse Milk for the mayor's office four years later.
