Northwest Connecticut Hit Hard By Economic Slowdown
BRISTOL, CT - NOVEMBER 11: Cars pass by a pawn shop November 11, 2008 in Bristol, Connecticut. Unlike the wealthier towns on the Connecticut coast, the area of northwest Connecticut depends on manufacturing and construction. The Connecticut Department of Labor has announced that the number of jobs in the state fell by 2,300 from August, 2008 to September as the impact of the nation's contracting economy began to worsen. The decline in housing has furthered job cuts in construction employment by 300, to 67,700. The manufacturing industry has lost 700 jobs, to 188,500. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)
