Lt. Gov. Daugaard wins 5-way Republican primary for South Dakota governor

Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard (DOO'-gahrd) has won a five-way primary in South Dakota to become the Republican Party's candidate for governor.

Daugaard defeated former Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman, Senate Republican Leader Dave Knudson (Kuh-NOOD'-sun) of Sioux Falls and Sen. Gordon Howie of Rapid City. Buffalo Gap rancher Ken Knuppe (Kuh-NOO-pee) was the fifth candidate in the race.

Daugaard now moves on to the November election to face Senate Democratic Leader Scott Heidepriem (HY'-duh-prim) of Sioux Falls. Heidepriem didn't have opposition for his party's nomination.

Republican Gov. Mike Rounds can't seek re-election because of term limits.
