US Senator John Kerry was given a letter from the Palestinian Hamas movement for President Barack Obama while on a visit to Gaza City this week, a State Department official confirmed on Friday.
"I can confirm that it was from Hamas to President Obama. It was handed to Senator Kerry who turned it over to the consulate," said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
He said US officials were now considering the letter and "how it should be treated."
