Simpsons Writer Explains Touching Reason Smithers Came Out After All This Time

The Internet (and probably Springfield) is buzzing with the news that The Simpsons’ worst kept secret has finally been revealed — Waylon Smithers announced he’s gay and declared his love for Mr Burns at last.

After 27 years of America’s longest-running sitcom, on Sunday night Smithers’ secret was out in the open, but the reason behind the episode is truly heartwarming.

Writer Rob LaZebnik penned the episode in support of his 21-year-old son Jonny, who is gay, he told the .

“I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought: ‘What better way to tell me son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?” N’aww.

Jonny was even given an early version of the script by his dad and helped edit the episode before giving it his seal of approval.

“We didn’t really want to have that big moment of, ‘I’m out!’, you know? Instead, we just have it be a big embrace — like everyone knows it,” explained Rob.
