Congress is about to make a BIG move against First Lady Michelle Obama, and it is provoking an angry response from Mrs. Obama.
Students and parents have railed against Michelle Obamas school lunch power grab for years. As TRN has reported again and again, students have rebelled against the repulsive lunches Michelle has inflicted on Americas public schools as part of the absurdly-named Hunger-Free Kids Act, which had made kids more hungry, as they throw them away in record numbers.
Students have taken to Twitter to denounce the horrid grub:
All while her own daughters have feasted on BBQ sliders, pepperoni flatbread pizza and meatball heros with sundaes at their $40,000/year private school, Sidwell Friends.
Like her husband does with nearly everything, from immigration to gun control, Michelle has no technical power to do any of this, but does it anyway.
But now, Congressional GOP is moving to stop her from determining what our children eat at school lunches:
From The Daily Caller:
Bipartisan legislation released on Monday by the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee could finally bring an end to years of aggravation over what Americas hungry children must eat in school cafeterias.
If it becomes law, the five-year bill would make dramatic changes to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the deeply unpopular, Michelle Obama-designed 2010 legislation that restricts school lunches in taxpayer-funded schools but not the private school first children Malia and Sasha attend.
The main features of the bill are provisions that ease stringent rules requiring school districts to purchase whole grains and delay limits on sodium, reports the Associated Press.
Under current federal law, Americas public schools must use whole grains at least 80 percent of the time if they take federal school lunch money.
The problem for years now has been that students detest the resulting foods. For example, students across American dont like whole grain pasta. And students in the Southwest dont want to have anything to do with whole grain tortillas. Also, schools in the South have problems even procuring whole grain foods to cook.
But an angry Michelle Obama has promised to fight until the bitter end to keep her guidelines in place. This is unacceptable, she said during a roundtable discussion of the issue. Its unacceptable to me not just as First Lady but also as a mother. One of her aides called the bill a huge slap in the face to the fine work Michelle has done to solve Americas school nutrition crisis.
So the battle lines are drawn, and it is not going to end well for the embattled First Spouse, as several Democrats have already signed on to the legislation.
Thats because isnt just the kids who find the Moochelle-mandated lunch menus distasteful. School administrators and lunchroom workers have also fought bitterly against the rules, and a huge majority of Americans support putting the entire program where millions of students every day throw Mrs. Obamas stale rolls or tasteless tofu burgers into the garbage.
