The supermodel Gigi Hadid is facing a major backlash on social media after doing controversial impressions of Melania Trump while hosting the 2016 American Music Awards on Sunday, November 20. Gigi not only made fun of Donald Trump’s wife’s accent and facial expressions but she also mocked at Melania’s Republican National Committee speech by making a reference to the speech being plagiarized from Michelle Obama.
“This is my Melania Trump impression. I have to get the face right,” Gigi told the audience before doing the impersonation. “I love my husband President Barack Obama and our children, Sasha and Malia,” she said, imitating a thick Eastern-European accent and hinting on the plagiarism scandal.

The viewers criticized Gigi of racism and being rude. One person Tweeted: “Gigi Hadid’s frankly racist impression of Melania Trump is really unacceptable”, while another added, “Making fun of Melania’s English accent is overdone, rude, and kinda racist. Gigi could’ve done better.”
Some of the people also argued that Gigi would not have impersonated a black person in the same manner as she did Melania Trump: “Hey Hadid girl if Melania Trump was a black lady you would not racist jokes about her. Stupid liberal double standard”.
Gigi said she believed Jay Pharoah is the best impersonator in the world. Jay co-hosted the 44th American Music Awards alongside Hadid and declared her impressions as “spot on”. He went on to do his own impression of Donald Trump. “I love Bruno Mars”, he said, “I don’t know what colour he is, so I can’t deport him”.
