Sean Spicer defended the President’s tweets Monday saying: “There’s no questions that something happened.” Trump’s tweets compared the discovery that his wires had been tapped while he was a candidate “Watergate” as well as “McCarthyism” prompting some agencies to accuse the President of McCarthyism himself.

McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. Dictionary.com provides the following additional definition: the practice of making unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques, especially in order to restrict dissent or political criticism.

Critics of the President’s assertions may in fact be engaged in a version of McCarthyism, just by accusing The President of McCarthyism, but the bottom line is Mr Spicer suggests that the wiretapping claim has merit.
